Can 3D be a part of internet? Can we be able to move away from flash based non-interactive games to much more interactive 3d games in internet? can we be able to look at 3d content on internet?
With the announcement of Khronos group with Mozilla, we are inching closer to reality, off course Virtual reality. At GDC they announced “Accelerated 3D for the Web – a new initiative spearheaded by Mozilla with Khronos to bring dynamic 3D graphics to web content everywhere.” This is going to be a big step in providing 3d technology on internet space. Most of the 3D development is done in OpenGL for desktop application, OpenGL ES for mobile application. OpenGL library are built in C. The libraries were initiative of SGI (Silicon Graphics) who later passed on the proprietorship to Khronos. OpenGL bindings are available for many languages. Java has JOGL as a binding. Java3d are the set of API’s which is maintained by Sun Microsystem. In fact Java3d gives SceneGraph knowledge plus 3d renderer engine(JOGL) to the community.
It has to be seen, How OpenGL can create a 3D environment on the web. Specifications are building up for integrating JS with OpenGL. Though there are many companies who have already started the development for a 3D web. Exit reality is one of them. Though they use JOGL with Xith 3D. Other development environment to look at for developing 3D apps in Java would be, J3D, Xith3D, JME, Aviatrix.
